Potential title assist?
I have no idea what to title this, and I would dearly like some assist.
It has been sixteen years since the modern world has collapsed under it's own weight. There is no gas, there is no electricity and strange shadow creatures known only as Nightmares have taken control of the darkness. Do not lean against the walls, the Nightmares will get you. Do not stand in teh shadows, the nightmares will get you.
It's a creed our heroine (as yet un-named) has lived by her entire life. Her parents tell stories of what life was like before, before solar powered strips hanging above and below your hammock so you can sleep in peace, of a time of controlled environments and readily made food and excess in every front of life. She doesn't pay much attention to the stories, they're just that as far as she's concerned. She has more important things to worry about, she's undertaken a job as a courier between the tiny towns that are close by. Nobody wants to travel very far from home, not even during the daylight, and it pays well (barter system).
All is well until her younger brother falls ill, and they have nothing to trade for the medicines he needs. She volunteers to take a message to the doctor's family, in a city that's roughly one hundred miles away (up for debate), in exchange for the medicine.
Her father arms her with an old pistol that she's given very rough lessons in how to shoot, and a map, outlining the route for her to take. "stick to the old roads, they'll likely be deserted and never cross under a bridge. the shadows are too heavy there."
She makes it, taking shelter on abandoned porches with her hammock and the few solar strips she's brought with her, but on the way she meets a Nightmare who, against all the facts, can talk to her.
It's here that she learns Nightmares are all that's left of humans after something else gets a hold of them and drains them of their physical form, and in most cases, their souls. Left as nothing more than a shadow, Nightmares hunger for flesh and bone of their own again, but their hunger can neve be met.
Armed with this knowledge, she makes a decision to trust this Nightmare, and try to put a stop to the terror on humanity.
I have been, terribly, calling it "Shadowland" as of now. But I would like something...better. Also, this is a very, very loose outline of the plot :x
